The United States lectures Georgia in a mentoring tone
US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan lectures Georgia in a mentoring tone and threatens to impose sanctions against this Transcaucasian republic if they do not carry out the reforms necessary for the United States and Europe.
She made such a threatening statement after the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party withdrew from the Agreement on the electoral model signed in December last year with the assistance of the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.
We recall that the unsuccessful attempt to carry out constitutional reform and the mass street protests that followed it prompted international partners to force more than 30 opposition parties, including Georgian Dream and the United National Movement, to sit down at the negotiating table. However, Mikhail Saakashvili's UNM and a number of small opposition parties did not sign the agreement. They accused the ruling coalition of having ties with Moscow and are very determined to continue the fight.
All this time, Georgian Dream tried to find common ground with the opposition, but the initiatives were not supported. European and American curators also closely monitored the processes, but tried not to interfere. The result of the five-month "truce" was the demarche of the "dreamers": withdrawal from the Agreement.
Representatives of the European Union also joined the solo of the American ambassador, who also insisted on a radical change in the political line. Viola von Cramon, a member of the special group of MEPs on monitoring its efforts in support of democracy outside the EU, urgently arrived in Georgia and met with a number of opposition parties and non-governmental organisations, but ignored the meeting with the ruling party. During the meeting with the opposition, the EP representative threatened the Georgian authorities with the withdrawal of financial support from the European Union and the United States.
The tone of communication of the American diplomat and the European emissary with Georgian politicians was very arrogant and did not allow any objections. It should be noted that a conversation in such a tone has already become a tradition for European and American representatives. Apparently, by giving Georgia certain funds (actually quite modest ones), the West considers itself entitled to determine the foreign and domestic policy of a sovereign state.
Another political crisis in Georgia is taking place against the background of the exercises of the North Atlantic bloc in this Caucasian republic.
NATO is deploying units of 15 states, including 12 member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance and three NATO partner states (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine) directly near the Russian borders. The annual Agile Spirit maneuvers were held to prepare Georgian units for service in Afghanistan.
However, despite the official completion of the Afghan operation, the United States and the alliance countries do not intend to abandon this militaristic tradition, thereby fueling the explosive situation in the region.
The statement of the commander of the US Navy in Europe and Africa, Admiral Robert Burke, who made regular threats against Russia, in itself counts for a lot.
In general, the rhetoric of the NATO command staff has long been surprising. It seems that the generals of the North Atlantic alliance are absolutely not familiar even with the basics of elementary politeness.
Apparently, this is not included in the set of mandatory liberal values with which Washington and Brussels are going to teach the whole world, including Russia.
"It can be argued that Russia is provoking us to strike first. We are not going to do it first without provocation, but at the same time I am not going to require my commanders to take the first blow to the jaw," Burke said.
Let's leave aside the general's rhetoric and return to the facts. At the end of June, the destroyer "Defender" entered the territory of the Russian Federation without warning near Cape Fiolent in the Black Sea. After several attempts to contact the command of the ship, the Russian border guards, in accordance with all international standards, fired warning shots. Only after that did Defender change course and leave Russian waters. The next day, the movement of the Dutch frigate "Evertsen" towards the Kerch Strait was noted. Military fighters and bombers were lifted into the air. After that, the frigate changed course and bypassed the Kerch Strait.
So who is provoking whom? The habit of blaming everyone and everything for their own sins has become such a common oratorical device among the NATO authorities that they do not even pay attention to the real state of affairs.
